Autumn Splendour
Autumn Splendour, first introduced in 1959, was Crown Lynn's best selling design of all time. It was available for purchase for easily repurchase pieces which may have been broken or misplaced (the other designs were: Green Bamboo, Golden Fall, Shasta Daisy, and Fashion Rose). These five designs were decorated with lithographs, meaning Crown Lynn was able to assure the public of each design's future availability as they could be consistently reproduced. This new replacement policy garnered great enthusiasm from the general public, as no supplier had ever made this kind of commitment before.
Out of these five designs, Autumn Splendour was the most popular - the design was simple, but it had a broad appeal and sold well throughout the 1960s.
Through this replacement policy, customers were able to buy their dinner sets a few pieces at a time, and this piece-by-piece approach quickly became the norm - as opposed to purchasing a complete box set in one go. By 1965, Crown Lynn had nearly 30 replaceable designs.
However, this replacement policy did have its downsides. Retailers had to be given at least a year's notice before withdrawing one of these designs from stores, making it much harder to introduce new Crown Lynn designs to the public.
After a long time at the top, Autumn Splendour began to decline in popularity in the 1970s. The simple, autumnal design of Autumn Splendour was outshone by bold and earthy patterns inspired by trends in the United States. Autumn Splendour was eventually discontinued in 1977.
