Fancy Fayre

The Fancy Fayre range was made between 1947 and 1955, and was part of Sir Tom Clark’s effort during this period to emulate British design. This particular range was based on the popular English Carlton Ware.

During Crown Lynn’s early days, Sir Tom Clark was keen to develop a correlation between his new company and the quality and respect of British potteries. He did this through the kinds of language he used when naming patterns (e.g. Wentworth Ware, Ascot Ware, etc.), as well as the design styles he adopted. More overt was his choice to include ‘Crown’ in the company name...

These Fancy Fayre pieces were slipcast, often glazed in yellow, before the tomatoes were handpainted in a vibrant red. They are quintessentially 1950s, and by the end of the 1960s, were very much out of fashion.
