Name/TitleCream jug - Pine pattern
About this objectRound cream jug with flat bulbous body, curved spout and ball handle. Matt charcoal colourglaze outside and dusty blue colourglaze inside.
A ball-handled cream jug in the ‘Pine’ pattern, designed by Dorothy Thorpe.
Dorothy Thorpe was an American glassware designer who collaborated with Crown Lynn to produce a range suitable for the North American market. She came up with a range of shapes which included ball-handled cups and jugs and a salad bowl. Several patterns were produced using these shapes, some of which were designed by Thorpe herself and some by Crown Lynn’s own designers. ‘Pine’, the pattern you see here, was a Crown Lynn design that was produced on a Dorothy Thorpe shape. The backstamp reads “Styled by Dorothy Thorpe of California.”
The ball handles initially caused production problems as they were difficult to fix to the cup and remain attached. They were not used on items made for New Zealand and Australia, which had more usual handles although the wide curved shapes were retained.
