Name/TitleDoor handle and rose - Heritage pattern
About this objectA 'Heritage' pattern, traditional shaped door handle from the Crown Lynn Porcelain Hardware range. Large traditional shaped door handle with metal fitting (known as rose) and square spindle mount and fixing plate. Flattened bulb shaped handle with white colourglaze finish and gold spiral onglaze motif. Plain round rose in gold coloured plated metal.
Door handles were made by Crown Lynn's sister company, Crown Lynn Technical Ceramics. They were manufactured using a dry press technique that had been developed and used successfully for many years in the production of electrical insulators.
Unlike the majority of Crown Lynn's products for domestic use, which were largely made from slipcast or press moulded earthenware clays, door handles and other technical ceramics were made using special porcelain-like powdered clays. The powders were mixed with various oils and waxes, dry pressed into shape and then fired in the kilns at 1300°c to create a hard vitrified product. They were then finished and glazed as required.
