Flora and Fauna Plaque
This is one of the few plaques made to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Crown Lynn Potteries in 1973.
This flora and fauna design was first produced in 1969, and the plaques were presented to various important New Zealanders - notably Sir J. R. Marshall who was gifted a plaque when he awarded Crown Lynn with the Trade Promotion Council's export award in March of 1969.
The intricate imagery was originally drawn up by David Jenkin before the embossed clay design was expertly carved by Tam Mitchell. These plaques then underwent a complex firing process before the gold lustre was applied.
These plaques represent a special relationship between Crown Lynn Potteries and the native flora and fauna of Aotearoa. Depicted in the design are many iconic native birds and plants - the Kiwi and Pīwakawaka, the Kōwhai and Pōhutakawa - just to name a few.
